Is Your Child Ready for Preschool?
Starting preschool is an exciting step for your child — and for you. It’s not just about age, but about skills and readiness to be in a structured setting. At Salah Tawfik Elementary & Middle School, we look at the whole child — socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually — to help them succeed.
Use this simple checklist to see if your child is ready. Every child grows at their own pace, so don’t worry if you can’t check every box.
1. Social & Emotional Readiness
- Can do simple tasks alone (putting on shoes, getting a toy)
- Can be away from you for a few hours without distress
- Shows interest in playing with other children and taking turns
- Can use words to express feelings
- Can follow simple two- or three-step directions

2. Communication Skills
- Can tell you what they need or want
- Speech is mostly clear to family and familiar adults
- Can hold short conversations
- Enjoys listening to stories and can retell parts
3. Practical & Physical Skills
- Toilet trained during the day
- Can wash hands and begin dressing with little help
- Can hold crayons, draw, or use blocks and puzzles
- Can run, jump, and climb safely
4. Early Learning Skills (Not required, but helpful)
- Knows some colors, shapes, or letters
- Can count to 10 or more
- Can focus on an activity for 5–10 minutes
- Curious about new things and asks questions
5. Islamic Values
- Knows Allah is their Creator
- Can say simple phrases like Bismillah and Alhamdulillah
- Shows good manners (Adab) like saying “please” and “thank you”
Your Role as a Parent
- Visit the school with your child before the first day
- Talk positively about school and answer their questions
- Start a consistent bedtime and morning routine a few weeks before school starts
If you can check many of these boxes, your child is likely ready for this exciting step. At STEMS, we will welcome them into a loving, safe, and faith-centered environment that builds both knowledge and character.
