Salah Tawfik Elementary and Middle School is proud to offer a full-time Hifz Program for students who would like to memorize the Quran with Tajweed. The curriculum integrates intensive Hifz instruction with core curriculum academics.
Prerequisites for the Hifz Program are as follows:
1. We accept both boys and girls from Grades 4-8
2. Student must have As or A&B letter grades in all subjects
3. The student should be well versed in reciting the Quran and should have the ability to retain memorized sections.
4. The student should have the capacity to memorize at least one page a day.
5. Admission is based on the teacher's assessment of the student. The probationary period is 90 days.
6. Hifz students will be evaluated annually for their performance of Hifz and academics.
Becoming a Hafiz takes lots of hard work and dedication from both the student as well as the parents. It depends on the student’s skills and their motivation for memorizing the Quran. We can’t place an exact time frame on how long it will take to become a Hafiz. Some students may take less than one year to memorize the Quran, while some students may take up to three or four years. Our goal is to help the student memorize the Quran in a way which they may never forget.
Hifz (Quran Memorization)
Hifz is taught through individualized instruction that incorporates correct memorization and review of new material as well as ongoing cumulative review in accordance with individually assigned daily, weekly, and monthly goals. Goals are determined in accordance with the student's demonstrated ability to memorize.
The Hifz curriculum is a standard plan by which the average student may memorize a moderate portion of the Quran each year beginning in 4th grade toward completion by the end of 8th grade. The individualized plan customized for each student affords early completion for exceptional students balanced against allowing beginning students the appropriate expectations for slower paced achievement.
NOTE: Emphasis will be placed on learning to read & recite properly in Kindergarten-3rd Grade
4th – 7th grade (4 Years) are considered the peak years for memorization. 8th grade is reserved for perfecting the memorization if a student has the capacity to memorize more and complete the entire Hifz in 4 years. Continuous review is conducted throughout the process in accordance with the table below. As this is a standard plan, exceptional cases will be considered based on individual student ability for students who are advanced, or who show a strong potential for completing memorization after the seventh grade.

(1) Please note that Hifz progress depends completely on individual capacity. One can memorize even faster than the timeline given in this curriculum. On the other hand, there is no guarantee of completion for the slow-moving student.
(2) After the completion one can review and strengthen the retention of the Holy Quran by reviewing with the Hifz teacher.
(3) After completing each juz’, the student will be tested in that juz’ even before the end of the quarter.
