Parenting in the Digital Age – An Islamic Guide
Screens are part of our children’s lives — iPads, games, and social media. Technology can help them learn, but it also brings risks like too much screen time, cyberbullying, and harmful content.
At STEMS, discipline means Tarbiyah — building good character, strong faith, and self-control, both online and offline.
1. Connect Rules to Faith
- Explain why rules exist (“No screen time after 8 PM so you can rest — your body is an amanah from Allah”).
- Ask: “Is this pleasing to Allah?”
- Use tech for learning and helping others.
2. Lead by Example
- Limit your own screen use during meals and family time.
- Have “unplugged hours” for everyone.
- Explore Islamic and educational apps together.

3. Practice Moderation (Wasatiyyah)
- Create a family digital plan together.
- Make bedrooms and dinner tables “tech-free.”
- Include daily “unplugged” activities like reading or outdoor play.
4. Teach Online Adab (Manners)
- Keep open communication.
- Address cyberbullying with kindness and justice.
- Remind children: Online actions count with Allah just like in-person ones.
